Like the most affordable Jeep, the 2022 Renegade is an entryway to the lifestyle type and a rugged alternative to most of the lower SUVs. While not all Renegades are created equal when the blacktop ends, the Trailhawk model is the most likely to need a tow and is best suited for its seven-grille grille. As an exterior design, the Renegade interior is designed to appeal to the part of our brain that once created full-length conversations between two dinosaur-shaped roses. It is full of unusual shapes, toy configurations, and minimal design wonders — such as maps stamped on cup parties and the phrase “Since 1941” was stamped on the dash plastic. Think of it as a joke. Renegade’s infotainment system uses an 8.4-inch touch screen compatible with the Uconnect interface. All systems include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, built-in roaming, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Jeep also offers the most powerful Kenwood sound system for selected models.
The 2022 Jeep Renegade comes out with a standard 1.3-liter four-cylinder turbo engine, 177 horsepower, and 210 pounds of torque. That latest figure is crucial to making a small Jeep go faster, but this is not a fast SUV. It can take time to climb to higher speeds, and making a passing direction or merging on the highway takes a few seconds.
The automatic transmission with nine gears is standard, and it gets ridiculed for its love of hunting to get the right gears or to slow down when you need access to additional turbo power.
With a standard fuel economy, the front-wheel-drive 2022 Renegade enters 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. That’s below the standard for a subcompact SUV, and fuel efficiency is significantly lower on models with four-wheel drive.
